Manual vacuum aspiration

1. Why Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA)?

Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is a better option than D&C!!

Manual vacuum aspiration is the process by which the content of the uterine cavity is evacuated using negative pressure produced by a special syringe. Flexible plastic cannulas, of different sizes (from no.4 to 12) depending on the term of pregnancy, are used for aspiration.

2. Advantages of manual vacuum aspiration:
  • This method avoids the trauma of the cervix and endometrium: until 7 weeks of pregnancy the cannula can be introduced without cervical dilation; the control curettage of the uterine cavity is not necessary.
  • Immediate examination of the obtained aspirate (the fetal egg remains intact in the syringe) allows to confirm complete evacuation of the content of the uterus and to establish an early diagnose of the ectopic pregnancy.
  • The procedure lasts less than in D&C, and can be performed under local anesthesia. In this case the patient can leave the hospital in 15 minutes.
  • The results of over 80 scientific studies in which approximately 80 000 women have been included, show that the number of severe complications and sterility is much lower in case of evacuation the uterine cavity by aspiration than by curettage.
3. What should a patient know after an abortion by manual vacuum aspiration?
  • After an abortion, for 2 weeks it is normal to experience pain in form of spasm in the lower abdomen and a slight bleeding.
  • The majority of women can return to their daily activities immediately after manual vacuum aspiration.
  • You can get pregnant immediately after abortion, without any menstruation before. For this reasons it is important to use an efficient method of contraception.
  • It is advisable to visit the doctor for a routine check in 2-3 weeks after the abortion.

4. You must immediately contact a doctor if:
  • You experience severe abdominal pain
  • You have a fever over 38 C, chills
  • You have a serious bleeding – elimination of large blood clots or you have to use 2-3 large pads during an hour for 2 hours in a row.
  • You observe vaginal purulent eliminations or with an unpleasant smell.
  • You have strong weaknesses, lost of consciousness, difficult breathing.
