Medical abortion
1. What is medical abortion?
- It is a non-surgical method of abortion recommended by the World Health Organization, to be effective and without risks. This method is used by women from developed countries in Europe, over more than 10 years, being recognized in 33 countries (France, Germany, USA, Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, China, India, etc.)
2. How efficient is medical abortion?
- The effectiveness of the method is on average 95-98% and depends on the correct regimen of the used drugs and on the term of pregnancy.
3. How does medical abortion work?
- The method consists of two phases: the first of taking the drug, which prevents the development of the ovum, and second phase – administration of the drug which causes uterine contractions and self-removal of the ovum.
4. What is the regimen of the drug administration in case of a medical abortion?
- On the first day, during your visit to the doctor, the first drug is administered, after 1-3 days it is necessary to take the second drug (the women chooses the place weather in clinic or at home).
- After 2 weeks it is necessary to visit the doctor in order to assess women’s condition and determine the status of pregnancy.
5. What symptoms can be expected after taking the drugs for medical abortion?
- Abdominal cramping in the lower part of the abdomen, which can be reduced with anti-inflammatory drugs like paracetamol, diclofenac, ketanov etc. The elimination of the fetal egg is associated with an abundant bleeding.
- Moderate or insignificant bleeding during 1-3 weeks or even until the next menstruation.
6. What side effects can be expected?
- In some cases you can experience: nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, weakness, fever, chills – but all this symptoms will be present for a short period of time.
7. What complications can occur?
- Complications are rare and may include: ongoing pregnancy, incomplete abortion, severe bleeding.
8. What happens in case of ongoing pregnancy or incomplete abortion?
- In case of ongoing pregnancy the patient is given an additional dose of drugs or the abortion is completed with manual vacuum aspiration. Incomplete abortion as well will require manual vacuum aspiration.
9. Advantages of medical abortion:
- Avoid surgery and anesthesia;
- Lower risks of infectious complications in comparison with surgical abortion;
- A more “natural” method of abortion;
- It is a more confidential and comfortable method.
10. Who can not use medical abortion to terminate pregnancy?
Women:
- with an suspicion or confirmed ectopic pregnancy;
- with intrauterine device, (must be extracted in advance);
- with adrenal insufficiency;
- with coagulopathies or anticoagulant therapy;
- that use therapy with steroid drugs;
- that are allergic reaction to drugs;
- with the term of pregnancy more than 9 weeks.
11. How soon after a medical abortion a women can get pregnant again and when she will have a normal menstrual cycle?
- Medical abortion doesn’t have a negative influence either on the women’s ability to get pregnant or on her health in general.
- A woman can get pregnant after 10-11 days after the abortion, so it is good to take a decision about the future contraception already at the first visit to the doctor. After the abortion the menstruation will begin as usual or 2 weeks later.
12. Re-using this method could have an unfavorable influence on the women’s health?
According to studies, repeated use of medical abortion has no unfavorable influence on either the physical or the psychological health of women.
