Statistics on abortion
Being legalized for nearly 50 years in Moldova, abortion is still a problem with dual aspect, medical and social. Today, according to official data, there is a reduction in the number of abortions (about 20,000 in 2001).
This can be explained by the introduction of national family planning program and the growing use of contraception, migration of women of reproductive age, but also non-registration of abortions in private clinics or because of financial problems.
According to official figures, approximately 10% of abortions were performed at first pregnancies, between the ages 15-19. The ratio abortion / birth is 0,4: 1 (in 1995- 1: 1), i.e. 24 abortions per 1000 women. Bearing in mind the demographic situation in Moldova (negative population growth (-4)) these data are quite disturbing.
Maternal mortality as a result of abortion still exists, and usually it is the consequence of criminal interventions, being embraced by financially unsecured woman or because of lack of education in the problem of abortion.
