3. What is the method to terminate a pregnancy?
There are several methods of abortion in the early stages!
Over 70% of abortions in our country are produced by dilatation with curettage (D&C). This method consists in dilatation of the cervical canal with metal expanders and curettage of the endometrium with a sharp metal curette. Possible complications of D&C are: perforation of the uterus, heavy bleeding, and severe infection of the pelvic organs. The method is very traumatic and can lead to various complications: spontaneous abortion, premature birth, bleeding and infertility.
Alternative to the D&C method is:
- the manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) or electric vacuum aspiration (EVA);
- medical abortion.
Medical abortion is widely distributed in the West and now also in Moldova. Using an electric vacuum aspiration (EVA) the pregnancy can be terminated if the gestational term is up to 5-6 weeks. Very often, to make sure that there are no residues left a controlling curettage is performed. Thus, the electric vacuum aspiration, currently practiced in Moldova is similar to the D&C method.
