Strategic approach in improvement policy, quality and access aspects, related to abortion services in the Republic of Moldova

On the 3rd of December at the Labor Institute, Chisinau took place the roundtable: Strategic approach in improvement policy, quality and access aspects, related to abortion services in the Republic of Moldova; Stage II: Development and pilot testing of the comprehensive care model in abortion, organised by the Reproductive Health Training Center (RHTC). The roundtable was attended by 70 guests: vice-directors on mother’s and child’s health from all districts of Moldova, specialists, representatives of the Ministry of Health and WHO.

 

Mr. Ronnie Johnson, WHO representative spoke about the implementation of safe abortion: technical and policy guidance for health systems.

Mrs. Rodica Comendant, presented the strategic approach Phase II: development and pilot testing of the comprehensive abortion care model in Moldova.

Participants evaluated the results obtained since 2006, performed within Phase I of the National Strategy on Reproductive Health for the years 2005-2015. Doctors from perinatal centers in Chisinau and Balti shared their experience and presented their outcome concerning the 2 model-centers opened in 2007 and 2008, by this achieving one of the goals of the Stage I of the National Strategy on Reproductive Health for the years 2005-2015.

Mrs. Victoria Ciubotaru, National Scientific Centre of Reproduction and Genetics researcher presented some fragments of the practical guide on National abortion standards and monitoring and evaluation system.

Mr. Peter Crudu, Center of Public Health and Statistics of Ministry of Health vice-director, proposed a new improved system of collecting data which will strengthen the tracking system of abortion, which will allow us to record the number of abortions, methods the abortion was performed and other criteria in order to monitor effective abortion Moldova. Beginning with 2009, this data will be entered electronically via Statistical Report No. 13, brought in by each medical institution, in which abortion and introduction of IUS is performed. Plenary discussions with WHO expert participation concerned the scaling-up: proposals and recommendations.

Following the good results of the model- centers opened in Chisinau and Balti, it was proposed to open similar model-centers in other 2 cities of the republic, which are to be selected in the near future.
